NEW PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR APPOINTED
(5/15/2007) Former Head of SCSU Police Prepares to Lead Department
NEW HAVEN- On June 4th, John Prokop will become the new Director of Public Works for the City, a position that has been filled on an interim basis for several months. Prokov, a 40 year resident of New Haven will leave his post as security director for the City’s Housing Authority in the next few weeks to take on his new role in Public Works. Prior to his tenure at the Housing Authority, Prokop led the Southern Connecticut State University Police Department.
“He is a very strong manager who, as a long time New Haven resident, knows the challenges we face in Public Works and is prepared to identify and implement solutions,” said Robert Smuts, Chief Administrative Officer. “John is an incredibly hard worker who brings significant experience to this position.”
Robert Levine, Director of Parks and Recreation for the City, has served as acting Director of Public Works while the City completed a search for a permanent appointment.
“I am looking forward to having John join our team,” said Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. “His solid years of experience leading larger workforces, balancing public budgets and his intricate knowledge of the City all make him a great fit for this job.”
Prokop sits on the New Haven Board of Education, a seat he will resign from before commencing Public Works responsibilities. Prokov lives in the Morris Cove neighborhood of the City with his wife and two children.
